Masters of Photography - Monthly Project | Ernst Haas

“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.” – Ernst Haas

I'm pretty excited to join this group of ladies and explore some of the masters of photography.  Each month we self-study a different photographer, get inspired by them and then go out and shoot.  I LOVE this project so far.  And I LOVED studying Ernst Haas.  I was really inspired by his use of color, reflections, shadows, and motion blur.  I really don't get a chance to go out and photograph without kids in tow, but I was able to apply these concepts to my own family photos and am pretty happy with how they came out.

The first and last photos in this post are my favorites.  In the first photo, I love the reds of the horse and the blue of her pants, the reflection of the street light in the front door, and the shadows against the house.  The last photo was taken while walking to the theater for a children's show. I had a plan in my head for the photo I wanted, cars in blur and my family waiting to cross the street - but on a Sunday afternoon in Cleveland there is hardly any traffic, so I had to stall them in this spot until a car came by.  I had one chance because I knew I couldn't stall them any longer.  It wasn't exactly what I had wanted but I'm still happy with it, and we had a good laugh too.
